Sustainable Set Design: Pioneering Eco-Conscious Construction Methods
In the modern production environment, sustainability has become a crucial obligation rather than just a trend. As environmental awareness rises, the set construction industry is adapting to meet the growing need for greener methods. At HELLOH, we recognise the importance of integrating creativity with ecological responsibility and we are devoted to minimising the environmental footprint of our construction practices. By embracing cutting-edge, sustainable materials and techniques, we support our clients in achieving their environmental objectives without compromising on the excellence of the sets we create.
HELLOH is aligned with the ALBERT Initiative, an influential industry body dedicated to reducing the ecological impact of the film and TV sector. From project inception, we make sustainability a top priority, assisting production teams in meeting the ALBERT certification requirements while fostering environmentally responsible practices throughout every stage. Our commitment to sustainable set design is inherent in all that we do, from selecting eco-friendly materials to implementing green solutions at every level of the build.
- Sustainable Materials:
- We use FSC and PEFC-certified timber, prioritising renewable sources.
- Chipboard is preferred (70% recycled wood).
- We optimise material use to reduce waste.
- We record all materials used for each project
- At least 98% of our paint is non-toxic and water-based.
- Set Repurposing:
- We retain reusable set elements like flattage, flooring, and architectural pieces for the future projects.
- We keep stock flattage, doors, windows, etc, to reuse.
- By thoughtfully repurposing these elements, we reduce the need for new materials, significantly reduce waste and lower production costs. This sustainable approach allows us to maintain exceptional design quality while minimising our environmental impact and promoting more responsible construction practices.
- Eco-Friendly Disposal:
- Partnering with Veolia, we ensure all materials, wood, metal,
plastics, plaster, acrylics, rubber and fibreglass are properly recycled. - The wood waste furnaces provide low-carbon heating while reducing
landfill waste. - Metal recycling involves collecting, sorting, shredding, and
melting before purifying and reshaping it for reuse. This process conserves
resources, reduces waste, and lowers energy consumption compared to mining
raw materials. - Plastics are sorted, cleaned, and melted down to create new
materials or products, reducing waste. This closed-loop approach helps
promote sustainability by reducing the environmental impact of plastic
production and disposal.
- Partnering with Veolia, we ensure all materials, wood, metal,
